1. Keep Nourished
Fuel yourself with a good nutritious breakfast before heading into work. Stress doesn't stop for lunch, so keep healthy snacks in your desk drawer for those times when lunch doesn't seem to fit in your day.
2. Identify Your Stress
Make a list of the things that cause you stress. Writing down your problems gives you an identity for the problems. Knowing what they are is the major key in how to handle them.
3. A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place
Most of your stress from work occurs right there at your desk. Make your work space as uncluttered as possible. Give yourself time each day to put away papers and do any filing that has piled up during your workday.
4. Breathe Deep
During your most stressed out moment, sit in your chair and take a deep breath. Breathing is a technique that you can always count on. Once you've had a few moments of deep breathing, your stress level will be lower and your desk won't seem like a war zone.
5. Take a Break
Take a break right now, where you're sitting at your desk. Sit back and relax and move your thoughts inward away from the stress of your current workload.
6. Grab on to Something
Stress balls are wonderful for reliving tension and can be done while sitting comfortably at your desk. Many companies have seen the positive benefits from squeezing stress balls and have started providing them to their employees.
7. Sit Taller in Your Chair
Do you feel slumped and rumpled at the end of your workday? Sitting all day without moving around causes vertebrae to decompress. Stretching your back and spine while sitting in your desk chair will help keep your body in line and keep you from "shrinking" due to stress.
8. Release Your Muscle Tension
Stress has a tendency to make us ball up and our muscles tense and bunch. While sitting at your desk, you can perform activities like the shoulder and neck rolls to release the tension you have been building up all day. Repeat as necessary to keep your muscles loose and stress free.
9. Twist it Out
Using twists you can combat the fatigue and cramps that you get from sitting too long. Use your office chair at your desk to twist your arms and legs around each side of your body. After completing these exercises you can return to your center stress free without ever have leaving your desk.
10. Tell a Joke
Studies have shown that smiles and laughs are the most relaxing tasks you can perform to eliminate stress. Finding a fellow employee to share a smile or a joke takes less energy than slamming your desk drawer or banging your keyboard and is much more therapeutic.
All the damage done to your body and mind through the stress you endure sitting at your desk for 8 - 10 hours a day can all be undone by following these 10 tips for relief.
