How to Remodel Your Home on a Budget

For those who have just purchased a new home completing all of the updates and changes to make the home your own can be overwhelming. However, all of these home repairs and remodeling tasks can be completed without completely breaking your bank account or making you loose you mind. Following these simple steps and to keep your budget in check and to keep your head from spinning out of control.

Begin by prioritizing the things that need to be done around the house. If there are no dangerous areas of concern begin with the area that bothers you the most or the one that will be most cost effective in the long run. This includes updating windows, adding insulation, or replacing old appliances with more cost effective models. Although they may cost money upfront they will save you money in the long run and allow you to put that savings towards other projects you want to complete.

Plan your projects ahead of time to be able to watch for bargains, sales, and deals. For example, I have been wanting to remodel the kitchen of my new home. The cost is quit overwhelming and since everything functions properly it is not a huge priority. However about six months ago I came across an above the stove microwave at a 50-percent savings so I purchased it and stored it in the basement. Then a few months later I found tile for my back splash at a close-out store. I was able to purchase the amount I needed at about a 60=percent savings of the leading home improvement store prices. More recently I found a stove at a discount because it had some minor damage that is will be hidden by my cabinets. So far for my kitchen remodel I have $1600 worth of products in which I spent $450 on.

Remember the three "R's"- renew, reuse, and recycle. Are there items just sitting around your basement or stuck in closets that can be used for your redecorating or remodeling purposes? It is amazing what a little paint can do to spruce item worn and tired items to make a custom look. In our house we had the old ceiling fans with the bright brass hardware and the wooden blades with the can inserts. The fans worked perfectly fine so it was a shame to throw them away and waste the money on new ones. Instead we bought some spray paint and new globes. Each of the bedrooms have spiffy customs ceiling fans for about $30 each.

Before you start a project, set a budget. Then decide where that money will be best spent. Ask yourself questions like do I really need new cabinets? Or can I refinish the existing ones? Maybe you can just purchase new doors and hardware to save yourself some time and money. Do you really need that expensive marble flooring or would you rather spend the money on appliances? Just as you prioritize your to do list you need to do the same with each part of the project you are about to tackle.

By breaking the project list down into individual projects instead of just a list of things that need done may make it feel less overwhelming and easier to complete. Instead of one item on your list such as remodel the house break it down into easier to complete tasks such as repaint the bedrooms, remodel the bathroom, etc. Being a homeowner should be an enjoyable project not just something that is going to suck your bank account dry and all your energy away.
