How to Remove All Music from Your iPod

Sometimes, after you have used your iPod for a while, you might find it getting a little bit crowded. Maybe you are tired of listening to the same old songs. Maybe you are tired of paging through your menus in order to find the songs that you want to listen to. It can be particularly frustrating when you have the iPod Shuffle. The Shuffle doesn't have a display screen that you can use to select the songs that you want to hear. With the Shuffle, you have to use the "back" and "forward" buttons to find whatever it is you are trying to find. Removing all of the music from your iPod can be a good way to start fresh.

To remove all music from your iPod, you have to make sure that your iPod is set up to "manually manage songs and playlists" in the options settings. If it is not set this way, you will need to change that first. To do this you will follow these steps:

1. Connect the iPod up to your computer.

2. Open iTunes.

3. Where it says "source" click on your iPod.

4. Click "options" on the bottom right hand corner of the iTunes screen.

5. Select "manually manage songs and playlists."

6. Click "OK."

Now that you are set up to manually manage your songs and playlists, it is time to start removing music. Here are the steps to remove all music from your iPod:

1. Connect the iPod up to your computer.

2. Open iTunes.

3. Where it says "source" click on your iPod.

4. You will see your songs listed. Click any of the songs you want to delete, or press ctrl-a to select all of them.

5. Press the "delete" key on your keyboard.

6. Click "OK."

There are some things you need to keep in mind with this process. If your iPod is set to automatically manage your songs and playlists, deleting the songs from your iTunes library will accomplish the same task. Also, remember that your iPod can be used to listen to other sorts of mp3s, beyond those that are for sale on iTunes, and that the iTunes software can help you manage these files as well as the ones you get from iTunes. Finally, recognize that deleted music can't be recovered, so be certain to backup anything you think that you might want to listen to in the future prior to removing all music from your iPod.
