This is Common in Most Babies

Kelly Fleming
The huge majority of all babies are born with cradle cap. Cradle Cap looks like flaky skin that is peeling the colors can be brown and yellow. It is all over the top of the baby's head sometimes with a severe case it can start to go down on the baby's face. It can be very itchy and uncomfortable for your little deal with.

This does not mean that your Baby is not clean it is just something that naturally happened during birth. It should eventually go away on its own if not treated at ages 6 to 12 months old. Further in the article listed are ways to help treat this and make your baby more comfortable, possibly even getting rid of this faster.

What Causes Cradle Cap

The experts are not completely sure but they believe that it is caused during birth where excess hormones pass over the oil glands. This is a very common occurrence and can show up in your child around 2 months of age.

This should naturally go away on its own when the child becomes one year old. There are cases where the baby has cradle cap into his toddler years. If this is the case with your baby seek help from your child's Pediatrician they can provide a better solution like seborrhea shampoo or a cortisone cream.

How to Get Rid of Cradle Cap

There are a few different methods to try you can pick one that works for you. When my son had cradle cap I would give my boy a bath and I would use a baby wash cloth on his head. After the bath was over I would take his baby brush and gently brush his hair a few times. This loosened a lot of the flaky skin from the cradle cap.

If that does not work for you try using an oil based product. Two different ones you can try are baby oil and olive oil. Gently rub some into his hair and let it soak in for about 10 or 15 minutes. Grab a baby brush or comb and gently brush the hair this will remove all of the lose flakes.

If you would prefer to use oil it is best to do this before your son takes a bath. The oil cannot stay on your baby's because it will clog the pores making the remaining cradle cap hard to remove. Your can either shampoo his head or rinse it thoroughly.
