How to Remove Glass from Your Dog's Paw

Broken glass can be found anywhere while walking your dog. Unfortunately, my dogs have had glass in their paws more than once. The first couple times I took them to the vet and the bill was quite expensive. If your dog has glass in their paw, you should take them to the vet to make sure all the glass has been removed. But I have learned how to take the sharp object out of my dogs' paws immediately and more than once the vet didn't have to do anything. My dog's paw was healed and there was no large vet bill.

To take glass out of your dog's paw, first you have to remain calm. If you stay calm, then your dog will also remain calm as you poke around with tweezers. You will need needle-nose tweezers, because other types of tweezers just won't grasp the slippery glass. To see what you are doing, a flashlight will also be very helpful.

I made my dog lie on his side, and he did get up several times, but I just made him lie back down. The first thing I did was hold a wet cloth over my dog's paw. This will make their pad moist and soft and easier on them as you push the paw pad away from the glass.

Next, gently push the pad away from the piece of glass. This will take some time, but it's important to open the pad up slowly so you can pull out the glass. The way to know glass is in your dog's paw is by taking the tweezers and moving it across the surface of the object. The tweezers will scrape on the surface of the glass so you know it's not part of your dog's paw or blood. When the space around the glass is wide enough, the glass will come right out.

There might be blood, and a hole might remain where the glass was lodged. I put a shoe or a sock on my dog's paw so that nothing gets in the open hole.

If you did find glass lodged in your dog's paw, you MUST take him to the vet as soon as you can, because the area may need more medical attention and need bandaged. Plus, your pup may have to take antibiotics so an infection does not develop.
