How to Remove Glued Down Rubber Backed Carpet

Amy Whittle
If you are familiar with traditional carpet installation, you may be surprised to encounter rubber backed carpet that is glued directly to the floor. For this type of carpet, adhesive is spread along the sub-floor, then the carpet is pressed into place. The rubber backing provides minimal cushioning: this type of carpet is typically found in commercial applications.

Step 1: Remove the baseboards with a pry bar. Number the back of each piece sequentially so you can install the pieces of baseboard easily once you have installed new flooring.

Step 2: Remove any obstructions from the floor and vacuum the carpet one last time to reduce dust when working with the carpet.

Step 3: Use a utility knife to cut around the perimeter of the room where the rubber backed carpet meets the floor.

Step 4: Starting at a corner, pull back the rubber backed carpeting from the sub floor. This will require a great deal of strength, you may have to work in sections, using a putty knife to detach the glue from the rubber backing of the floor.

TIP: If possible, try to detach the carpet using force. Applying a solvent to remove the glue will melt the backing of the rubber carpeting, creating a chemical hazard that will be difficult to dispose of. If you feel you must use a solvent for this step, be sure to wear the proper safety equipment, especially gloves, a respirator, and eye protection.

Step 5: Discard the carpet. You may have to talk with your local waste disposal company for removal options.

Step 6: Scrape away any remaining glue with a razor blade floor scraper or a metal bladed putty knife. Particularly stubborn patches can be chiseled away with a cold chisel if necessary.

Step 7: Clean the floor with a vacuum cleaner to remove any remaining dust or dirt. You are now ready to install your new flooring over the sub floor.
