Removing Ink from Silk Fabric

If you've ever accidently gotten ink on a silk outfit, you probably asked yourself "How do you remove ink stains from silk?" It might seem devastating and like the silk fabric is ruined forever - but do not despair, removing ink from silk fabric is possible!

One of the most attested to methods for removing ink from silk fabric is using an alcohol based hairspray. The alcohol in the alcohol based hairspray is able to break up the ink and lift the stain out of most fabrics, so it is worth trying. It is possible however that this alcohol based hairspray may ruin or damage your shirt - so always test in an area where no one would notice first before attempting to remove ink stains from silk. You do not want to remove the ink stains only to now have a giant discolored spot or other flaw in the clothing!

Once you have tested and made sure that the hairspray will not ruin the silk fabric, you can now go ahead and proceed with spraying the alcohol based hairspray on the stain. Be sure you put a cloth or paper towel behind the silk fabric so it does not leak through all over you or onto the floor! Once you have applied the hairspray, the next step is to blot the fabric with an old towel. Repeat this process as necessary until the ink comes out. You may wash the silk fabric as usual, but be sure you do not put the silk in the dryer if there are any traces on the ink stain left - you will likely never be able to get it out!

Alcohol based hairspray works so well for removing ink stains from silk fabric I am surprised that no one ever has tried to bottle it and label it as "ink remover" or made "ink remover" type of pens that you see for other fabric stain removers!

If for some reason you still cannot get the ink out, another good viable option is to speak to a dry cleaner. They may have the experience and the know-how to give you additional insight on answering the question of "How do you remove ink stains from silk?"
