How to Remove an Inspection Sticker

Alicia Bodine
Cars are required to be inspected every one to two years. That depends on which state you live in. Whether you pass or fail, you are given a sticker to place on your windshield in the lower left hand corner. This tells police that your car is either fit to drive or not. Most inspection facilities will remove old stickers and place new ones on for you. If, however, the sticker was placed on crooked, you may want to remove it and put it back on correctly. You may also want to remove the sticker yourself if you are getting rid of the car.

You will need:

Blow dryer
Heat gun
Plastic spatula
Steam
Goo Gone
Warm water
Paint scraper

Follow these steps:

Step 1:
Turn your blow dryer on low heat. Begin heating up one corner of your inspection sticker. Carefully begin lifting up that corner and working your way to the opposite corner. The key to using this method to remove your inspection sticker is to work slow and steady.

Step 2:
Use a heat gun instead of a blow dryer if you have one readily available. Heat guns are great because you can position them at any angle. This will help you direct the hot air exactly where you want it. Again, work your way from one corner to the opposite corner. This time use a plastic spatula to help lift the inspection sticker off of the windshield.

Step 3:
Hire a professional that works with glass. They have devices that let out steam. The steam will loosen up the glue so that the sticker comes off with ease. If you have a way to apply steam to your sticker, go ahead. It would be really hard to boil a pot of water and then carry it out to your car though.

Step 4:
Apply Goo Gone (see resources) to the sticker if you no longer need to keep the sticker. Wait five minutes and then peel the sticker right off. Throw the sticker in the trash when you are finished.

Step 5:
Soak your sticker with warm water. This can be done through a spray bottle or by holding a wash cloth over the sticker. Then use a paint scraper made for glass to scrape the sticker off.

Tips and Warnings:
Ask the Inspection facility to remove the sticker for you. Most likely they will because it only takes them a few seconds.

Don't just scrape the sticker off. You may scratch the glass on your windshield.
