How to Remove Masking Tape from Windows and Glass

Matt Hobbs
Here are a few basic tips for removing masking tape from windows and glass. Time is critical. The longer tape sits on a glass surface the harder it will be to remove it. If the tape is fairly new and in one piece you can try to pull it off at a 180 degree angle. This minimizes the risk of it tearing and becoming a bigger problem. But that is probably not why you are here reading this.

Pre-treat the masking tape with something that will soften the tape.

Pre-treat the area with a number of solutions. Similar to duct tape, WD-40 works wonders on just about anything. If you soak the area, it will help soften the tape making it easier to remove. You can also use nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol, Goo Gone, Orange Oil, or another product you like for cleaning. You will have to let the solution soak into the tape as much as possible. You can use a paper towel and hold it in place. You may need to do this more than once to get the tape soft.

If the solutions worked well at making the tape soft, you can use a coarse sponge, soap and water to remove the rest. You can also try Goop since it is abrasive after you softened the tape. If it is still being difficult, try one of these methods.

Scraping the tape off the window or glass

After soaking the tape, use a razor blade to try and remove the masking tape. If you have a flat piece of glass this method will often succeed easily. If the glass is shaped in any way like a car window or glass vase it doesn't work as well. Keep the blade at a low angle almost parallel to the glass surface. If you do this at much of an angle you increase your risk scratching the surface of the glass. (I scratched my car window this way) You can also use a spatula or a putty knife if you don't have a razor blade or want to minimize risk.

A fingernail also comes in handy when the surface is an odd shape or more fragile. This one may take a bit longer, and mess up your manicure, but is well worth it if you want to be delicate and don't want to use cleaning chemicals. At the very least, if you can get the tape wet with warm water, that will help you remove the tape.

Finally, if you don't want to use chemicals or water, you can try a hair dryer to heat up the tape to a point where it becomes softer. Then scrape it off with one of the above methods.

With a little hard work and perseverance, you can remove tape from just about anything using these common remedies. You may have to soak it, scrape it, and repeat multiple times, but eventually it will come off. I have some taping tips in another posting you can check out for the next time you tape off a room.
