How to Remove Mold on Popcorn Ceilings

Jennifer Habersham
While not popular today, popcorn ceilings were all once the rage. Between the 1950s and the 1980s, a special spray on treatment was applied to ceilings. That spray on treatment resulted in a cottage cheese or popcorn look. Popcorn ceilings often contained asbestos and molded easily. Thankfully, removing mold from a popcorn ceiling is quite easy.

Things You'll Need:

Gloves
Goggles
Squirt bottle
Bleach
Water
Ladder
Wash cloth

Step 1-

Because you are working with bleach, it is imperative that you wear protective gear. Gloves and goggles are a must. Failing to wear protective gear can lead to burns to the skin or other injuries.

Step 2-

When cleaning with bleach, always use a 1:1 ratio. For example, if you add 1 cup of bleach to your squirt bottle, add 1 cup or water, as well.

Step 3-

Adjust your ladder so that it is beneath the mold. Work in small areas. Do not try to cover the entire surface of the ceiling at one time.

Step 4-

Spray the popcorn ceiling with the bleach/water solution. Spray liberally and allow to air dry. Repeat until all of the mold is gone. Once the area is mold free, move to another section.

Step 5-

Wet a washcloth and wipe down the popcorn ceilings. Use a gentle patting motion. Do not rub. Rubbing may cause the "popcorn" pieces to break off. Allow the ceiling to air dry.
