Step 1: Make sure that any openings leading to the interior of your space are plugged so the squirrels cannot get in. This includes gaps underneath door and vents into the house.
Step 2: Place pans along the perimeter of the room. Fill each pan half full with ammonia. The smell of the ammonia should drive out the squirrels. Wear a high qualty face mask and eye protection for this task.
TIP: While working in the attic, consider posting someone outside with a sharp pair of eyes to note where the squirrels are leaving the attic. This will help you find any holes and repair them.
Step 3: Allow the ammonia smell to permeate the space. Start looking for holes with a flashlight that could indicate where the squirrels are coming from. When you find a hole, fill it with an ammonia soaked towel to prevent any re-entry.
Step 4: Patch each hole with a piece of metal hardware cloth. Screw it into place so the squirrels cannot push it to gain entry to the attic. If the squirrels have chewed through the drywall, you can use joint compound over the metal hardware cloth in order to simulate drywall.
Step 5: Go outside and fix any holes apparent from the exterior of your home. Look for holes underneath the eaves, once again, metal hardware cloth makes a good patch if you don't have something else to use. Of course, if the hole is in a roof you should use shingles. A thick piece of wood will also work once it has been painted to match the exterior of the home.
Step 6: Remove the pans of ammonia while wearing the face mask and eye protection. Be sure to dispose of the ammonia responsibly, or pour it into a container for later use.
