Sterling silver necklaces need to be carefully used and taken care of. Placing the necklace in an air tight container when not being worn will not tarnish and discolor. The air has gases that will cause the tarnish in sterling silver and turns green. Even with taking great care and keeping the necklace in air tight container some will experience green like tarnish on the skin where the necklace was. This is due to the chemical make up in a person and will not be able to wear the necklace or jewelry. Even the most expensive sterling silver will tarnish a neck line or where the jewelry was worn.
Removing tarnish from a necklace can be easily done.
One home remedy is to use antibacterial hand soap or liquid dish soap with antibacterial in it. Do not use any other form of antibacterial liquids as it will damage the sterling silver on the necklace. Gems and stones are safe to be with the antibacterial soap also.
Placing a small amount of antibacterial soap in the palm of the hand, placing the necklace in the palm and gently rubbing the necklace in the soap will take the green tarnish off. Continue to do that till all the green has been removed. Rinse with clear warm water and carefully towel dry not to tangle the necklace.
A sterling silver cream can be purchase. Usually the creams are inexpensive and can be used easily. After purchasing the cream find a soft rag. Place a small amount of cream on the rag. Rub the cream gently on the necklace removing the green tarnish from the necklace. Once the tarnish is removed rinse with warm water thoroughly. Patting dry with a towel, not to tangle the necklace, once dry place the necklace in the air tight container to prevent tarnishing again. It is not recommend to get any of the cream on the stones or gems as some creams can damage the gems and stones.
Sterling silver cloth can be purchase. A person would take the cloth out and start gently to wipe the necklace off till tarnish is gone. The down side of a sterling silver cloth is if the necklace has detail work possible the cloth can not reach this area and will not to come out.
