How to Remove Urine Stains from Wood Floors

Alicia Bodine
Hardwood floors add elegance to your home. They require minor maintenance and do not need to be replaced often like carpets. Unfortunately, wood floors can be stained when they come in contact with urine that is not immediately cleaned up. Pets and small children may have accidents on the wood floor without you knowing it. Once you discover the urine stain, you need to take actions to remove it.

You will need the following items to get rid of the urine stain:

Paper towels
Spray bottle
Hydrogen peroxide
Baking soda
Vinegar
Oil
Dry cloth

Follow these steps to get rid of the urine stain:

Step 1:
Set one or two paper towel sheets over the urine stain.

Step 2:
Pour 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and squirt over the paper towels until they are completely wet. Leave for two hours, re-squirting any time the paper towels begin to dry up.

Step 3:
Pick up the paper towels and toss them in the trash. Coat the urine spot with baking soda to absorb any excess hydrogen peroxide.

Step 4:
Mix 1 tbsp. of vinegar with 1 tbsp. of oil. Pour over the urine stain and rub in with a dry cloth. This will remove any lingering urine odor and restore any shine that was lost.

Tips and Warnings:
Utah State University recommends bleaching your wood floor if you can't remove the spot that was stained by the urine. Once you have finished bleaching the area, sand it.

Apply a stain that matches your wood if you don't want to bleach it.
