How to Remove Vinyl Siding

If you ever need to replace or remove vinyl siding from your house, it is a fairly easy do it yourself project. You may need to take off just a damaged section or remove all of the vinyl siding to replace it. Either way, removing it is not hard. All you need is a couple basic tools and a small amount of your time. Here are some tips for how to remove vinyl siding.

The first thing you need to do is collect a few tools that you will need to do the job. One tool you will need is a zip tool, which is a tool for removing vinyl. The metal blade on the zip tool is flat and bends into a hook. The hook end of the zip tool is what you use to place under the vinyl siding panel to lift it out. Zip tools can be found in home improvement or hardware stores. In addition to the zip tool you need a hammer and pry bar to remove the nails out of the vinyl siding.

Find a vinyl siding panel that needs to be removed. Next, locate the bottom lip of the vinyl panel that is located right above the panel that you need to remove. Place the zip tool along this lip and hook it into the vinyl panel's notch.

With the zip tool locked in place, gently pull down. This will cause the panel that you are removing to unlock from the vinyl siding panel above it. Continue to hook your zip tool along the length of the panel.

After the panel unlocks, lift it up so that you can get to the nail strip beneath that attaches the vinyl siding to the side of the house. Use a pry bar or hammer to remove all of the nails.

After all of the nails are removed, push down on the vinyl siding. The panel will be completely unlocked at this point and you will be able to remove it entirely. Before you completely remove the vinyl siding panel, mark a line right above the panel that you are taking out. The mark will be helpful when it comes time to install a new piece of vinyl siding into the right location.

Removing vinyl siding panels is not hard at all. You just need a few basic tools and a small amount of time to get the job done.
