The warmest and the coldest months of the year bring about dry skin. Most skin on the body is easy to keep moisturized; however the lips are extremely visible when dry. Slathering the lips in lipstick or gloss only highlights the problem. Here are three tips to help maintain soft youthful lips.

Creating smooth lips starts with adding a new step in the daily beauty routine. Use an old toothbrush and gently exfoliate the lips. When the lips are extremely dry treat them with sugar and natural fruit oil. Combine just enough to make a paste. Scrub lightly to gently exfoliate the lips.

Cracked Lips

Lips that are cracked will need extra care. Create a barrier to protect the lips. Use a light layer of natural fruit oils directly on the lips. Use any natural fruit oil for cooking that may already be in the kitchen cabinets. Raw Shea butter and coconut oil are the perfect consistency to soothe painful lips on the go. Simply place a small amount in a small recloseable tin or a sealed plastic bag for applications throughout the day.

Lip Balm

Follow with a medicated lip balm. There are numerous brands of medicated lip balms that promote fast healing and moisture retention. Carmex is an affordable popular brand that works well. Read the ingredient list and look for packaging that addresses cracked lips. Once the cracked lips are smooth again, start to experiment with lip plumper's.

Lip Plumper

There are non invasive ways to add temporary volume to the lips. If the lips are currently extremely cracked, exfoliate and moisturize for a few days. After the skin on the lips has no flaky skin; start to experiment with different types of lip plumper's. There are clear glosses are well as long wearing colors to try. Drug stores and grocery stores carry lip plumper's in the makeup section. Maybelline, Sally Henson, and L'Oreal all carry lip plumping products that are under $20.

Some lips seem continuously dry and cracked due to the body being dehydrated. Drink water upon rising, before lunch, and dinner. Reach for water in the evenings instead of soda, alcohol, or any drink that contains caffeine. If these beverages are consumed drink an additional glass of water to offset the dehydration that will occur. Healing the lips with natural fruit oils and medicated lip balm can help prevent embarrassment. Try lip plumper's as an alternative to invasive lip injections. Use these tips to achieve soft plump lips year round.
