So the unthinkable has happened, you've cracked your Corian brand countertop, what to do next? There are many opinions as to whether they can be successfully repaired by the average do it yourselfer, most of which would say no. The popular opinion by the professional is that there are no easy ways to replace your crack. But read on as I have found that this may not be the case.
The first thing you will need to do is clean out the crack in your countertop very thoroughly using hydrogen peroxide, this will help to eliminate any bacteria that has lodged in the crack, next I found a repair kit that is readily available at www.refinishingonline for $27.95. This kit comes with 7 individual containers of mix and match colors, a color mixing chart, clear coat, mixer and spreader, some 400 grit sandpaper and a brush. It also includes detailed step by step instructions.
After the crack has been thoroughly cleaned and allowed to dry at least over night, take a look at your color chart to find the closest possible match to your countertop, it will tell you how much of each of the individual colors to add to the mix. I recommend using a piece of white cardboard or paper for a mixing palette as this will not change the hue of your mix. Mix the colors together and then adjust the tint to get as close a match as you can to your countertop. Fill in the crack with the mixture and using the spreader provided with the kit gently push the filler into the crack so that it does not settle as it dries. Try in fact to leave the surface of the filler raised above the level of the countertop; this will be sanded off so that it is all level.
Once it has dried, allow at least 24 hrs for this, you will use the 400 grit sandpaper provided to gently sand the repair level with the original surface. After sanding the repair smooth use the clear coat to seal it and after allowing it to dry you should have a barely visible repair that will last for a very long time.
This is something that an average homeowner with basic DIY skills can do, time wise the actual repair can be done in about half an hour. The hardest part will be trying to match the color of your original countertop. If you have a multicolor or wood look finish you may have to mix more than one color and allow each individual color to dry before adding the next. However, remember that for larger cracks it may be necessary to call in a professional to do the work or replace the section.
