How to Repair Hole in Drywall

John Messina
Repairing a hole in drywall is not that difficult to do. With the proper tools and material patching a drywall hole can be completed in one day from start to finish. See below for these simple steps.

You will need the following tools/material for this project:

Fiberglass Mesh Tape
Joint Compound
Medium Grit Sandpaper
Putty Knife
Utility Knife

Step1:
Cut a piece of mesh tape, leaving about a half inch excess over the hole. Use utility knife to trim excess over hole.

Step2:
Using a putty knife apply joint compound over the mesh tape. Smooth out joint compound so there is no excess.

Step3:
After joint compound dries, lightly sand until the surface is smooth and edges are even with the wall. If necessary fill any cracks with joint compound that may have appeared after sanding. Let dry and re-sand lightly.

Step4:
Prime surface with a primer, let dry, then paint with color to match your wall color. Apply 2nd coat of paint if necessary.

if the wall you fixed is one that you often (due to the placement of a door or window) look down, or light comes down the length of, you may want to repaint that entire wall so as not to see the touch-up paint.
