Step 1: Lightly sand any scratches that are deeper than 1/8 inch with extra fine sandpaper. For superficial scratches, skip this step.
TIP: Only sand lightly, to diminish the depth of the scratch but not remove it completely. Most bamboo flooring is made of thin strips of material. Sand too vigorously, and you could uncover the layer of bamboo underneath the top layer.
Step 2: Buff the scratched area lightly with a soft cloth. If you used sandpaper on the scratch, carefully remove any sawdust with the cloth.
TIP: Very superficial scratches may be able to be buffed out with just a soft cloth. Try it before attempting to fill any imperfections.
Step 3: Fill the scratch with a bamboo flooring surface filler. Using the nozzle of the surface filler, force the filler into the entire length of the scratch.
Step 4: Smooth the patch with your finger or a plastic edged putty knife. Let the surface filler dry completely before continuing.
Step 5: Examine the dried patch on the bamboo flooring. Add more surface filler if necessary and allow it to dry to allow for any shrinkage. When the scratch on the flooring has been filled to your satisfaction, allow it to dry and proceed.
Step 6: Buff the surface filler and surrounding area with a soft cloth.
Step 7: Spray a light coat of polyurethane over the surface filer and the surrounding area. You may want to allow the polyurethane to dry and then apply a second coat. Wait 24 hours before walking on the repair.
TIP: High traffic areas and repaired areas on your bamboo flooring may need to be refreshed with a coat of polyurethane every few years.
