So what should you do if you if you spill water or a liquid on your laptop computer? Well there are several things you can do, and it also depends on the liquid the steps you will take. It is imperative to turn off the laptop as soon as possible so it doesn't short circuit. As soon as the spill happens, yank the cord. The next thing you want to do is to turn the laptop upside down and figure out how to take the keyboard off. Once you have figured out how to take your laptop keyboard off, open the keyboard and take a towel and gently soak up all the liquid. If it was just water, it is not as bad as say a soda or fruit juice. These types of liquids will make your keys and keyboard sticky. You will need to clean the inside of your laptop with warm water.
You must then let your laptop dry out over the course of 24 hours. Use a blow dryer to dry out the inside of your computer. If your keyboard is too sticky, or it doesn't work after, you may just need to buy a new keyboard. Consider yourself lucky if the only thing you have to replace is the keyboard and don't get too bummed out if the keyboard doesn't work. Keyboards are very very easy to replace and are not as intimidating as you think..
In conclusion, water and liquid damage is one of the top reasons that laptops meet an early demise. It is imperative to cut power to the laptop as soon as the liquid touches the laptop. It should be a knee jerk reaction to cut power, then open the keyboard and grab a towel and start soaking up liquid. I was able to save two laptops this way, but one did not make it sadly. I believe the reason most laptops die is from short circuiting. Water damage, dropping your laptop and heat are the three big killers, remember this and you will be sure to have your laptop for a long time.
