DIY Repair for Your Storm Door!

Is your old storm door about to fall off its hinges from the wear and tear, and high winds? High winds that can easily catch a storm door and tear the closer mounting brackets and even crack the door frame. The wear and tear that can happen to storm doors can even strip and loosen the mounting screws. If your storm door is in desperate need of repair, here are some easy, quick tips to repair it and have it working like new once again.

The materials you will need for repairing a worn out, damaged storm door.

A new closer bracket

Mounting hardware

Steel plate reinforcement (reinforces the door frame)

Repairing a damaged storm door used to involve the difficult job of patching the old holes or splicing in a new trim. But by installing a heavy-duty steel plate, it can be mounted anywhere on the frame of the door. This can accommodate basically any type of closer bracket making it simple.

The first thing you will need to do is lock the storm door all the way to the open position, and then remove the old closer bracket and bracket screws from the door frame. Pop out the pin to release the piston arm, and then discard the old bracket. The easiest way to install the door frame reinforcement is to slide some small finishing nails through the new steel plate, and then into the old screw holes to help align the steel plate. Next mark and drill the eight mounting holes that will go into the steel plate. When you mount the steel plate, make sure it is parallel to the door frame edge. The new steel plate should cover most of the trim damage that was caused by the old closer bracket. Any cracks that are visible can be filled and painted later that wasn't covered by the new steel plate.

When the new closer bracket is mounted to the steel plate, be sure to properly position the closer bracket so that the angled edge is facing the storm door. This will provide the correct required spacing between the doorjamb and the storm door. And this will allow the closer bracket to function properly. Now you can connect the piston arm to the new bracket with the piston pin. Make sure you test the storm door and that it opens and shuts properly.

By following these steps, your old worn out storm door can be repaired and working properly in no time.
