How to Replace a Blown Computer Power Supply

This is a common occurrence when a lightning storm comes through and you left your computer plugged in or turned on. Now your computer will not turn on at all. Most the time people think the system is gone & there is nothing to fix it. Will here is the steps to replace your blown power supply.

Things Needed:

1. New Computer Power Supply

2. Computer with Blown Power Supply

3. Phillips Screw Driver

Instructions:

1. Unplug your Computer system & remove all the wires make sure there is no power in or connected to the Computer.

2. Remove side panels of your computer you may have to check your owner's manual online to see how they come off. Most the time you remove four screws from the back of the computer, two on each side and slide the panels off.

3. Locate the main power wire that connects to your motherboard. This is the Bulk of wires that connect all at once to your mother board with one or two large plastic white connectors. This can be removed by pushing in on the connector while pulling.

4. Locate & remove all the power chords from the power supply to your Internal Devices this will include your Hard Drive, DVD Player, or CD player.

5. Remove the screws from the back of the power supply there is usually more than five or so and are found at the back of the computer case where the power supply fan is located. Before you remove the last two screws hold the power supply in place so it does not fall and damage internal computer parts.

6. Remove the power supply from unit & do the reverse instructions, Replace Screws, Plug Wires back in appropriate places to Internal Devices such as DVD Burner, CD Rom, or Hard Drive or Drives. Plug the Power Supply into the mother board with the large connector or connectors & replace side panels with screws.

7. Connect all the correct wires & turn the computer on. If the computer turns on and loads your operating system then you're done! That's all you have to do to replace the bad power supply.

Side Note On Models:

Depending on the make & model of your computer you may have to read your owner's manual on how to remove the side panels or even the power supply some are held in by place with plastic levers that you just pull or some have just one screw. The above steps are general repair of regular systems some are much more difficult due to the fact they try to make it easier and it makes the job harder.
