How to Replace a Faucet Handle

Amy Whittle
Faucet handles can be chipped, stained, or otherwise damaged, while the rest of the faucet is in excellent condition. In this case, many faucet manufacturers offer replacement faucet parts, including just the handles. Not only will replacing just the faucet handles save you money, but you will also not have to alter the plumbing of your sink in any way.

You may also want to replace the old handles with new faucet handles to update the appearance of the faucet itself. In this case, contact the manufacturer for possible handles that will fit your old faucet.

Step 1: Locate the replacement handles. Although your local big box home improvement center may not carry the required parts, many manufacturers do. If you can't find replacement handles, contact the manufacturer directly to find out if they sell them individually.

Step 2: Locate the screw that attaches the faucet handles to the rest of the faucet. The location of this screw varies depending on shape and design of the faucet. In some instances, the screw is hidden underneath a decorative piece. You should be able to use a thin bladed putty knife to pry up this piece to find the screw underneath.

Step 3: Remove the screw that you have just located using the appropriate screwdriver. Save the screw: there may not be a new one included with your faucet handle.

Step 4: Remove the faucet handle. In most cases, you should be able to lift up and remove the handle completely. Other handles may be twisted on like a screw, so try turning counterclockwise if you can't just pull up. You may need to use some penetrating oil, like WD-40 to remove stubborn handles.

Step 5: Attach the new handle to the faucet, reversing the procedure you used to attach the handle. Use the screw you removed in step 3 to secure the handle or use the new screw included with the handle.

Step 6: Replace any decorative pieces that you removed to locate the screw.
