Step 1: Thoroughly clean the old insert to avoid spreading soot when you remove it. Sweep the area thoroughly, then vacuum any remaining soot and dust.
Step 2: Locate where the fireplace insert connects to the chimney piping and detach the two pieces. If you don't see any chimney piping, skip this step.
Step 3: Lay down a drop cloth to protect the floors and surround area from damage.
Step 4: While wearing heavy gloves remove the fireplace insert. Depending on the size of the fireplace insert, you may need to request help in order to move it safely.
Step 5: Make sure the chimney pipe is in good condition. If you haven't installed one already, now is the time to do so. You should also replace the chimney pipe as necessary.
Step 6: Check the top of the roof for flashing between the chimney pipe and the top of the chimney.
Step 7: If there is no flashing in this location, install some. Be sure to screw into both the chimney pipe and the masonry of the chimney to prevent leaks. Add a chimney pipe cap if there is not one already on the chimney. Screw that into place as well.
Step 8: Clean the fireplace cavity with warm water and a brush. Allow it to dry completely before continuing.
Step 9: Slide the insert into place. Attach the top of the insert to the bottom of the chimney pipe. Replace the grate and any other items you had to remove to gain access to the fireplace insert.
