How to Replace a Jeep Liberty Window Regulator

Maggie OLeary
The Jeep Liberty has had numerous problems and recalls on the power window motors. If your vehicle is out-of-warranty, or not covered by any recall and the window regulator goes out, you can easily replace it yourself. If you are new to this, it may seem like a daunting task, but it's actually very simple. It should take you about 30 minutes to remove the entire motor/regulator assembly, and another 30-45 to install the new part.

First, remove the door panel by removing the three screws from the door panel, and pull the panel off. There is one screw located inside the armrest. The second screw is at the top of the door panel, near the back of the driver's seat, and the third screw is under the door handle. Hold onto the door panel and don't let it drop, this could damage some of the wiring inside the door. You may also want to have a friend on hand to help you, so they can support the glass and other parts, to keep them from breaking.

Next, gently unhook the wiring from the components inside the door. You will find power window mechanism wiring and your power door lock controls. Lay the door panel to the side with the screws, so you can find them later.

Remove the stereo speaker from inside of the door. Remove the four screws from the outer edge of the speaker (one at each corner). Then, gently disconnect the wiring from the back of the speaker and place the parts to the side.

After you've removed the door panel and speaker, gently lift the vapor barrier off of the door. Don't forget to keep the adhesive that is attached to this barrier, as you'll need it when you put the vapor barrier back on.

Look inside the door to find the window motor. Remove the window from the metal clip that attaches it to the motor by pulling out the pin that is on either side of the window. As you do this, you'll want to make sure you are supporting the window glass, so it doesn't slip and break. You may want to have a friend help you with this.

Pull the window glass out of the door, and put it in a safe place. This will enable you to reach the window motor and regulator. Unplug the wires from the window motor. You'll need to remove the four screws from the regulator, and remove the three screws from the window motor. Then, pull the entire motor and regulator assembly off together.

To install the new part, simply do the steps in reverse! Good luck!
