How to Replace a Military DD214

Kimberley Riccio
A simple process and in most cases, a DD214 replacement copy can be obtained by filling out a Form SF180 and contacting the military installation where the member obtained the discharged. The Form SF180 is a request for military records; it can be used by the veteran or his family. If this is not possible, then filing an e-request through the eVetRecs system at the National Archives Web site offers the best way to obtain a DD214. The Veteran's Administration also can help with requesting military records.

Step 1. Pull up the national archives Web site. On the right hand of the screen, locate the eVetRecs box. Click on the option that takes you to the eVetRecs window.

Step 2. Click on the "Continue" button at the bottom of the window after reading the notices and privacy act statements.

Step 3. Follow the instructions on the screen for filling in the blanks. The screen will ask questions as to who you are, the relationship and what information you are seeking. Make sure that you fill in each blank and answer every question before proceeding to the next window.

Step 4. Click the "Continue" button located on the right side of the window. Continue to answer each question by filling in the blanks. The screen will ask questions as to the branch of service, active or reserve, enlisted or officer and a request category. Choose the option for Military History. This will category will produce the DD214 or separation report.

Step 5. Click the "Continue" button on the lower right side of the window. Continue to answer each question by filling in the blanks. The screen will ask questions as to full name, social security number, service number, date and place of birth and date of discharge.

Step 6. Click the "Continue" button on the lower right side of the window. Select whether you would like a deleted or undeleted report. Deleted means that certain information has been blocked out from the DD214 for the protection of the veteran.

Step 7. Click the "Continue" button on the lower right side of the window. Fill in the blanks for where you would like the form or information sent. Also, fill in phone numbers and email address as requested on the online request form.

Step 8. Click the "Continue" button on the lower right side of the window. Verify all information on the request and click on the "continue" button to submit the request.

You will receive a confirmation by email. A copy of the DD214 could take up to 2 or 3 weeks to be received by mail.
