How to Replace an Old Set of Bike Handlebars

Susan Brown
Are you looking to replace your bike's old handlebars with a set of new ones? After you have made sure that you have purchased the correct size, etc. for your bike, here are the handy steps on how to proceed with installing your new set of handlebars. Make sure, as well, that you have the proper tools necessary to complete the project, which will undoubtedly include a pair of small pliers to remove bolts, etc.

Step One: If you have a repair stand (a very handy thing to have), go ahead and clamp your bike into the repair stand. If not, set your bike up in such a way that it will not move when pressure and movement is applied to it.

Step Two: Go ahead and remove the bar ends and grips. You want to loosen all the bolts on the brake and shift mechanisms/levers and perhaps even the front and rear brakes.

Step Three: Proceed with loosening your bar clamp bolt where the stem and bar attaches to one another.

Step Four: Slip the brake and shift levers right off.

Step Five: Slip the old set of handlebars right off the stem.

Step Six: Slip the new handlebars on the stem!

Step Seven: Proceed to replace the brake and shift levers back the way they were. Make sure your housing is the correct length as you do this.

Step Eight: Tighten the stem bolt after adjusting the bar to sit properly on the bike.

Step Nine: Replace the bar ends and grips.

Step Ten: Feel around everything on the bike to be sure that everything is nice and tight and secure, and you should be finished! Give it a little test drive!

Yes, you can replace your own handlebars for a bike. Don't worry about spending lots of money at a bike repair shop when you can do it by yourself! With this handy guide, you can be a do-it-yourself-bike-repairman (or woman)!
