How to Replace RAM in a Mac Mini

It's Not as Hard as You Might Think!

Josh H.
Since Apple introduced its entry-level desktop in 2005, users have found new and interesting ways to use it. Folks have done everything from using the Mac Mini as a headless server to installing it in their vehicles. But there is one simple way you can improve your Mac Mini user experience and that is by increasing the stock RAM. If you purchased a Mac Mini with only 256 MB or 512MB of RAM, as I did, then you are missing out. By upgrading your machine's RAM to 1GB you can greatly improve its responsiveness and speed. I got a great deal on a 1GB stick of RAM from eWiz but no doubt you can find other similar deals around the internet. Just check on Apple's support website or in the documentation that came with you machine to insure that you get the right type. Replacing the Mini's RAM does not require special tools or particularly special knowledge. I have upgraded RAM before in a traditional, tower-style desktops, but nothing quite like the Mac Mini. The experience, as you will find, turned out to be interesting, educational, and completely painless.

The Mini's enclosure can only be removed by the use of a putty knife (yes, a putty knife). You simply have to turn it upside-down, insert the blade of the putty knife along the bottom edge of the chassis and pop it up. You will hear the clips inside popping. This is normal. It can be difficult at first but just slowly insert the putty knife between the cover and chassis. Do it first on one side and then on the other. Once you have the first side, the second side will be a little more difficult because there will be more pressure, but it can be done. Once all the clips have been popped, the cover should come on off and the "guts" of the Mac Mini will be revealed.

With the top removed you will see the optical drive on top covering most of the underlying components. The memory stick is located next to this. This is the easy part. There is a clip at each end of the memory stick. When you push down on them they will unlatch and simultaneously eject the RAM from its slot. Compare the new stick to the old one to make sure that you insert it the correct way. Inserting RAM the wrong way has been known to cause damage to the RAM itself so this step is very important. Once you know which way to insert it, simply push it down into the slot; you will hear and see the clips snap back into their original position.

Next just reattach the cover to the chassis. Start by getting the back lined up with the I/O slots. Then simply press the rest of the cover into place. As you press the cover back on you will hear all of the tabs snapping into place. After this your newly-upgraded Mac Mini is ready to go back into service. Whether or not you are dissatisfied with the current performance of your computer, you will not be able to deny the difference a memory upgrade can make. Applications open faster and everything is just a little snappier. Good luck!
