How to Use Replay Media Catcher on Linux Using Wine

Blair Mathis
Replay Media Catcher is an application from Applian that allows you to capture and save any streaming media from any website, including commercial websites such as Hulu (though the legality of that is debatable), Youtube, MySpace Videos, Pandora music and more. This wonderful program has no equivalent when it comes to the number of websites it is capable of copying from.

Unfortunately, Replay Media Catcher is only designed for Windows, which leaves few alternatives for Mac and, especially, Linux users. Lucky for Linux users, there is an application called WINE available that allows users to run some of their favorite Windows apps. It would seem the perfect solution, except for one problem--Replay Media Catcher doesn't seem to work with it.

The following instructions will show you how to get Applian's Replay Media Catcher working on your Linux operating system. It was tested on Ubuntu 8.10 with the latest version of Wine and worked perfectly.

Items Needed:

Wine
DLLs
Replay Media Catcher
Firefox for Windows

Step 1: The first step is, of course, to install Wine if you don't already have it on your system. In Ubuntu, this can be accomplished via the Add/Remove Programs located in the Applications menu.

Step 2: Once Wine is installed, download Replay Media Catcher and save it to your Desktop. Right-click and choose to open the device using Wine. It will take a moment to appear, but when it does, simply follow the installation wizard to install the program. When finished, launch the app either by the icon it placed on the desktop or by going to Applications > Wine > Programs. You will get an error saying that it can't do '*' procedure in mfc42.dll.

Step 3: Go to DLLDump.com and download mfc42.dll. Open the 'C Drive' folder inside the Wine menu and open the folder called 'system32'. Copy and paste the DLL into that folder.

Step 4: Try to launch Replay Media Catcher again. You will get the same error, but this time, it will be for a different DLL. Download that dll and repeat step three.

Step 5: Once again, launch Replay Media Catcher. It will start like normal this time. It will not, however, record anything when you start a video. This is because it's looking for the Internet browser in the C drive, which your default browser obviously is not in. To get around this, you will need to install Firefox for Windows through Wine. Simply download the Firefox for Windows EXE and run it through Wine.

Step 6: Open the Firefox installed in Wine and start Replay Media Catcher. Navigate to a video site to test the app. It should record the video correctly. You will find the 'My Recordings' folder in either Documents or Desktop.

Ubuntu Jaunty with latest Wine produces error below.

Worked previously on Hardy - not sure if this is a Jaunty issue or a Wine issue but this is no longer a runner.
