Aside from that, these books are not investments, they do not gain any more value when you buy them and store them for a long period of time. While old books may be collectable, U.S.-licensed manga and anime dvds are rarely collectable, because they are relatively new and easy to buy at the store.
I have personally bought lots of manga and anime over the years, and they made me really happy. I spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. However, there came a time when I simply grew up, got tired of it, and never wanted to ever read or watch the same things ever again.
Throwing them out would be a terrible waste, and I ended up selling and donating them off in various ways.
There are various methods you can use to pass on your old anime and manga merchandise.
1) You can see your old anime dvds and manga books on ebay. However, the downside to this is that you are completing with a large group of people. Also, do not forget that lots of counterfeit anime dvds are sold on ebay, and those prices may be a lot lower (e.g.: 1-2 dollars) than what you are willing to sell for your legitimate anime dvds. (This method may require paypal).
2) If you have a Livejournal (and if you don't, you can sign up for one), then you can join Livejournal communities such as "garagesalejapan," in which you can make a post and write about what it is you want to sell. Then you can negotiate with whoever bids the most money. Realize, however, that this transaction is riskier than using ebay, because you are working out a deal on your own. I recommend that you use paypal for this transaction.
3) You can also donate your manga books and anime dvds to the library. Many times, anime or manga that is not very famous in the U.S. is not in high enough demand for you to sell it. However, libraries are always willing to take in books. It is extremely easy to put all the books you want to donate into a bag, and donate them at the front desk the next time you are at the library. You will also be doing a great service to society by donating.
4) Craigslist. This is a free service and you can put out a listing which alerts people in your area that you have old manga and anime dvds for sale.
5) You can also sell them at the flea market. I personally would not recommend this step because you have to spend time and energy setting up a stall. Plus, you have to spend many hours at your stall, when you could be doing something else.
