How to Restore Linoleum

Tom Servo
Linoleum floors need special care to make them last and keep them looking good. People often confuse linoleum with vinyl, but the two are quite different. Vinyl is more durable than linoleum and can handle a lot more wear and tear. This is why only certain cleaning products should be used on a linoleum floor. Linoleum is made from linseed oil. Over time the linoleum will begin to dry out and start to become brittle. Cleaning and waxing your linoleum floor will restore its natural shine.

Step 1

Pour a generous amount of ammonia on the floor and spread it over the entire surface with a mop. Rinse the mop clean in a bucket of hot water.

Step 2

Scrub the floor with a nylon-bristle brush. Then use a mop and hot water to soak up and clean any remaining ammonia on the floor.

Step 3

Dry the floor by wiping it down with clean towels.

Step 4

Apply floor wax to the linoleum. Refer to the instructions on the bottle of wax for how to properly apply it. Wash the floor again after 24 hours.
