How to Restore Your Old Car to it's Former Glory

Returning Your Car's Former Glory

I personally, I am mad about old cars. I attend the concours delegance annually without fail. Motor shows for new cars on the other hand, interest me to a lesser extent. Old cars are harder to manage mainly because of their age, difficulty in finding genuine parts and lack of mechanics who know sufficient information on how to fix old cars. Cars are generally the second most costly investment after housing; they then should be treated with the at most care.

The first thing that you need to know when it comes to improving your old car is to buy genuine parts. Fake parts will not last for the same period of time as genuine parts. These parts in most cases will spoil your car and their efficiency does not match the original one. Also avoid using parts form other types of cars. Some parts can be custom made for you at local garages the more complex the part the better equipped garage you will need and the more that you pay. The specific car manufacturer can make for you the part that you desire even though they no longer manufacture that car. Custom made parts are not that costly and their tailor made function will be done better. This will also substantially increase the resale value of your car especially for the older models.

The engine which is the car's heart is the neediest part. The engine should especially have good genuine parts. This is because of the corrosion, dirt and friction that it endures. Buy the correct and the best petrol possible, the higher the octane rating the better the fuel (The octane rating will be shown on the side of the fuel pump the greater the rating the better the fuel). Good fuel will decrease the knocking and increase the timing accuracy of fuel explosion; this will reduce the mechanical damage on the car. Make sure that you check the oil level regularly and buy the best. Note that the most expensive does not mean that it is the best, it should be well rounded.

The best paint job should be done. Visual stimulation is the best tool that you car can have, impression is everything, a person would want to look under the hood if he thinks that it is as clean as the exterior. The paint should be sparkling to attract you and others. This will make you feel good about your car. The interior is also of importance, the calibration equipment aught to be impeccable and leather seats are the best. The color of the interior must be pleasing to the eye.

Join car clubs. These have a high concentration of a specific type of car and the members are more responsive to the questions that you have; the advice that you will get from them will be invaluable. Enter your car in car exhibitions to improve its esteem. Other people who like your car will encourage you to maintain your car. Remember that cars are valuable assets and should be given all the due respect.

Treat your car like a person, the more you talk to it the more the information that it will give you. Just like you visit the doctor and dentist regularly, take the car to a good mechanic regularly even if you see no problem in the way it runs. 80% of car damage occurs during the first 10 seconds after the ignition key is turned. This is because oil needs to circulate the engine and other vital parts before they are used. Let the car idle for about 30 seconds then start driving off slowly; the longer the car has been inactive the longer you will need to do this for up to 30 seconds. Beyond 30 seconds, stress will be concentrated on the engine. Water is of at most importance especially in old cars which heat up faster than newer cars. Engine over heating can cause serious and expensive damage. Engines that run too cold also suffer because sludge accumulates in its parts. Check your coolant temperature. Some old cars will not have all the gauges that new cars have but all these readings can be checked manually.

  • Acknowledge your car, give it a name to personify it.
  • Listen to your car. It may prefer running a few miles below the speed limit so allow it.
  • Hard work and sweat is the price of a piece of history. Nothing can match them.
