How to Resurrect Vintage Ski Jackets

Josh Ryan
It seems that all the old stuff from the '70s is coming back into vogue, and this certainly extends to vintage ski jackets. Examples of the popularity of those old times can be found in all the ancient shows being rerun on television- "That '70s Show," "Happy Days," "The Partridge Family," and "The Brady Bunch," to name a few. Nowadays, there are stores set up specifically to sell vintage ski jackets and other old clothing and furniture.

Anyone searching for vintage ski jackets may be surprised at just how accessible they are. If nowhere else, you can find them online. Any color or style is out there, including stripes and clashing colors. Online stores are the most versatile locations to find vintage ski jackets, and that includes the well-known Ebay.

One rather unpleasant aspect of vintage ski jackets is that outer wear hadn't come as far back in those days. In other words, vintage ski jackets usually don't have the same amount of durability or features like waterproofing, and they used that awful poly filling. However, if you just want to wear vintage ski jackets as a style and you aren't actually trying to ski in them, then it's probably not really an issue.

The only issue possibly left even for vintage ski jackets worn for style is the poly filling. One way to make sure it spreads evenly is to put a tennis ball in the clothes dryer with your vintage ski jackets on low for half an hour. That should cure it, although this depends on how flat the filling is. If it doesn't do the trick, you could also refill your vintage ski jackets.

As far as the way vintage ski jackets handle the elements, they really don't, especially in regards to moisture. You can layer vintage ski jackets with a waterproof windbreaker if you must wear them skiing. It works, even if it is somewhat troublesome.

A lot of vintage ski jackets just weren't made as durably as the ones on the market today, which may come as a surprise considering that newer is usually cheaper. Keep in mind that some new materials have been developed for protection against the elements. It may be that the material would rip too easily, in which case you might want to save your vintage ski jackets for show only.

Vintage ski jackets are something desirable to many, along with a lot of other things from those bygone days. Rest assured that you can have your vintage ski jackets without a lot of trouble, even if they don't serve you as well out on the slopes as newer ones would. If nothing else, you can wear your vintage ski jackets for fashion purposes.
