How to Make a Retro Frying Pan Clock

Pam Parent
Retro accessories are becoming increasingly popular. This retro frying pan clock will add a touch of whimsy to your kitchen. This style of clock will complement most home decor, but looks especially nice in a rustic, retro or country style kitchen. I found that a thin, almost flat frying pan works best. You will also need to make sure the frying pan has a smooth surface on both the front and back. These retro clocks also make nice gifts, and van be personalized by writing your name at the bottom, center of the clock. You can use an old or new frying pan for this craft project.

Retro Frying Pan Clock

Supplies:

Medium sized frying pan
White acrylic paint
Paint brush
Tiny paint brush
Drill
Clock parts
Burgundy acrylic paint
Black Sharpie pen
1/2 of gingham ribbon
Scissors
Ruler

Directions:

1. Wash and dry your frying pan. This is especially important if your using a used frying pan. If your frying pan has a few rough edges, rub sandpaper over the front and back to help get a smoother surface.

2. Drill a hole through the center of the frying pan. Drill from the back to the front of the frying pan. Check to make sure the hole is big enough to screw clock parts in. If it isn't large enough, carefully drill the hole slightly larger.

3. Paint the front and back of the frying pan with white paint. Let dry. I find it usually takes three coats of paint to cover both the front and back of the frying pan.

4. Once the frying pan is completely dry, hand-write the numbers on the retro clock with a black Sharpie pen. To make sure the numbers are evenly spaced around the frying pan clock, make sure to measure an approximately 1 1/2 inch space between numbers with your ruler. I also make the numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9 more prominent on the retro frying pan clock.

5. Pour a small amount of burgundy paint into an old bowl. Dip the small brush into the paint, then paint a burgundy border around the edge of the frying pan. Let dry.

6. Screw the clock parts to the frying pan clock following the directions on the package. The battery pack will be on the back of the frying pan.

7. Tie a gingham bow on the bottom part of the frying pan handle.

Tower Hobbies offers the Walnut Hollow clock kit for $7.59. You can also find clock parts in the craft section of a department store.
