Take into account that some stores have clearance items and will not allow you to return those items. Be sure to know how many days are allowed to pass before they refuse you on returning an item. There are only a handful of stores that will allow you to return an item without the receipt, usually only if you explain that it was a gift. I have done so through stores such as Wal-Mart and Sears. Some of these larger stores have an area for customer services and are always ready to deal with customers in situations such as this.
When returning any item always bring along some form of identification. Usually your driver's license is sufficient but you can use other identifications as well. Most of the time along with these drivers licenses they will want your name, address and phone numbers to complete the return.
Getting into the habit of keeping receipts is something you should be doing already for tax purposes. It is easy enough to get a recipe box to make it easier for sorting through your receipts. A recipe box is the perfect size to keep all your receipts throughout the year. You're also able to separate them by store to store which makes it very handy if you have to return an item to a particular store. Make sure you put the most recently bought item in the front for easy access.
Honesty is the best policy when returning your items tell the customer service person why you returning the item whether it be because you did not like the item or that the item was and what you thought it was at the time of purchase. Even if it was a gift explain to them why it is you're returning it maybe it's a toaster and you have the same toaster. If you're having a hard time returning an item you might take this opportunity to speak to a supervisor but always have a smile on your face and speak in a tone that's respectful. Raising your voice will only complicate things and the possibilities of your item being returned will be slim to none.
