The evidence of reversing the coronary artery disease have come from the autopsies done on people who lived through extended periods of malnourishment during World War II. There was very little or no atherosclerosis growth of cholesterol loaded plaque found in their coronary arteries. But as the economies of war stricken countries recovered from the post war effects, the levels of food and diets 'improved', immediately atherosclerosis struck back. These finding are well enough to prove that extreme dietary changes can reverse the coronary artery disease.
Some cholesterol lowering drugs like statins, available in the market, help in the possibility of reversing coronary artery disease. Though intensive studies have shown that cholesterol lowering with statins have shown mixed results. With the use of statins, atherosclerosis might decrease in one area but it can develop in another. But the feature of the statins is that even though it's not necessary that statins always shrink plaque, it still helps in reducing chances of heart attack and strokes. Statins helps in decreasing the fluid fats inside plaque with stabilization and inflammation process. Dry and tougher plaques are not very likely to cause heart attack.
If you want to clean your arteries, you can opt for some of the approaches recommended:
Reversal Diet: It is mainly a vegetarian diet which offers not more than 10% of calories from fat and fewer than 5 milligrams of cholesterol in a single day. Other important factors included are daily exercise, stress management and group support. A small trial was done on 48 volunteers and it is found that the cholesterol blocked plaque shrank in a small amount by following these things.
Plant Based Oil Free Diet: It is another option available.
Caloric Restriction: It means eating a healthful and balanced diet which provides all the necessary nutrients but with 15% to 25 lesser calories than you probably eating now.
Very Important: If you decide to try out one of these approaches, please do it under observation of a qualified doctor and take drugs prescribed by him/her. But one thing always keeps in mind, your efforts can only decrease the plaque, you can never obliterate them.
