How to Review a Video Game

Mark
I consider myself to be an average writer at best. But, if I had to pick one thing that I like writing about the most, it would be video games. I like coming up with a review and I try to point out the good parts and bad parts of the game. You may ask, "What do you look at to help decide if the game is good or bad?" In the following paragraphs, I will try my best to explain what I think should be discussed in a video game review.

First of all, there are four main points you need to look at when reviewing a game: graphics, sounds, gameplay, and replay value. Graphics and sounds are pretty self explanatory, but gameplay and replay value may be confusing to new video game players. Gameplay is a huge part of any game! This is where you review your experience when playing, and talk about exactly what you do in the game. Whether it's a shooter or a sports game, this is where to discuss the details of the game itself.

Replay value is huge as well. Some games that I have played are short. They only have a single player campaign, which does not even last 10 hours. This helps decrease replay value. No multiplayer (online or split screen) is something that also contributes to a lack of replay value. However, some games have lengthy single players, plus some sort of multiplayer. This usually helps increase replay value, which keeps you wanting to come back and play some more.

As I stated earlier, graphics (visuals) and sounds (audio) also play a role in determining how good a video game actually is. In my opinion, graphics are not the most important thing. It's all a matter of how fun the game is. Sounds are similar in that the better they are, the better the game can be, but if they are not that good, it doesn't ruin the game.

In Conclusion, when reviewing a video game, there are four things you need to focus on: graphics, sounds, gameplay, and replay value. Once you understand all of these terms, there is only one thing left that you need to know! The longer you play the game, the more experience you'll have with it. So, writing a review is easier the more you play the game. I hope this guide was helpful, so now it's your turn to start reviewing video games.

These are great points. I play a fair number of games but I've never felt like I could write a review. This makes me think that maybe I could after all. But I'll never be as cool as your avatar! LOL

Great article! I agree with your thoughts, and I approach my game reviews pretty much the same way.
