How to Make Rice Milk at Home

Cathy Jourdan
When my first born came along, he had some major issues with formulas. No matter what we gave him, it seemed that he got sick or at a minimal, had severe gas. The doctor told me that he was probably sensitive to milk and added that I needed to buy a non dairy type of formula.

Well, back in those days, I think I was working for $1.75 an hour and the non dairy formulas were very expensive. I remember my mother-in-law told me not to worry about it, that I could make it. I thought she was crazy but I tried it and it was so simple I couldn't believe it.

All you need to do is put one cup of rice and two cups of water in a pot and cook the rice the same way you would for dinner. Once the rice is done, bring two more cups of water to a boil in a separate pot and add a teaspoon of vanilla and a dash of salt. To make it taste a bit better, you can add a teaspoon of sugar as well. Then add your cooked rice to this water mixture and place in a food processor or blender. Blend until the mixture is smooth and let sit for about thirty minutes. This wait time allows any sediment to settle to the bottom. Pour over a strainer very slowly, avoiding allowing too much sediment to go through. There you have it. You can serve it warm or cold and, you can store in the refrigerator for later use.

This is a great, affordable option if your child cannot handle regular milk. Do keep in mind that rice has different nutrients than milk so always make sure your baby gets the vitamin supplements recommended by your pediatrician.
