How to Get Rid of Acid Reflux Disease

Getting Rid of that Painful Heartburn is Pretty Easy

William DuBose

One of the most painful and aggravating conditions that many people suffer from is something called acid reflux disease. This condition, which afflicts the throat and upper chest area, can cause intense pain shortly after eating food. Generally, it is regarded as one of those things that people do not realize they have until it starts to really become a problem. Most commonly, you will hear people refer to acid reflux disease as a case of "heartburn". The way it happens is fairly simple, but can be very painful. After you eat a meal, the acid in the stomach breaks down the food in order to store it or use it as energy. After that process is done, some of that acid works its way up into the esophagus. This is the phenomenon that causes the painful "burning" sensation that so many folks complain of.

There are certain symptoms of acid reflux disease that you might need to know in case you ever acquire this condition. In addition to the painful heartburn, you might begin to experience ulcers on the inside of the throat. These can be painful and can lead to bigger problems. In addition, one might develop a stern cough that will not go away with medicine or cough drops. If this sounds like you, then you might have acid reflux. One of the worst symptoms of acid reflux disease is something called Barrett's esophagus. Barrett's is a condition in which prolonged exposure to the acids causes cells to break down and change into different cells that are more like those in the stomach. While this may sound safe, it is generally a condition that can lead to much more difficult circumstances, including cancer.

While heartburn might be the most common symptom of acid reflux disease, not all heartburn is a direct result of it. Heartburn is often caused by some simple factors such as a bad diet or eating food too close to sleeping time. One can stop heartburn by staying away from certain foods which can trigger acidic digestive conditions citrus fruits, spicy foods, and dairy foods. These are harder to digest and they can lead to an over production of the acid in your stomach. Eating late at night is also a thing that should be avoided at all cost, as the instant you go to sleep, the only thing keeping digestive acids out of your esophagus is your lower esophageal sphincter, which will open up to allow some gases produced during digestion to escape and if you are lying down, this 'burp' can often times be an acid bath.

Another popular way to fight acid reflux is by taking a tablet to fight the condition. These "antacids" fight against the harmful effects of heartburn and help keep the digestive juices down in your stomach as opposed to allowing them to shoot upwards. Pepto Bismol is a tried and tested way to get rid of the bad acid, as well. Take this if you need a quick fix to this stomach ailment.
