How to Get Rid of Dandruff

Erica Williams
Having dandruff is not a life threatening condition and it really doesn't drive people away from you unlike what we see on television commercials. However, it can be burdonsome to the person who has it. Dandruff is caused when skin cells die and the form to form flakes that stick to the hair or fall to the shoulders. The flakes are usually large and comes in bundles. The scalp becomes very itchy and irritated. Dermatologist call this condition dermatitis for people who have ongoing problems with excessive dandruff.

Anyone that has excessive dandruff will be the first to tell you that ordinary shampoos give them little relief of any. Some remedies that have been experiemented with to rid dandruff is putting mouthwash in the hair. Listerine in particular has been used to banish dandruff. In the early 20th century, Listerine was actually promoted as a dandruff treatment believe it or not. It hasn't been FDA tested but it does contain a number of herbal oils that have antifungal treatments in it. A matter of fact, Listering has ingredients in it that correspond to other products such as Vicks VapoRub.

Try strong shampoos that specialize in treating dandruff. Dandruff shampoos are available in just about any drug store. Many have claims to treat and get rid of dandruff. These shampoos are backed by research that they affect yeast on the scalf and reduces flaking and itching. Medicated shampoos contain antifungal drugs and some have anti inflammatory actions as well. Pay close attention to the instructions on the bottle. The directions may be to use the product everyday, every other day, or not for a period to exceed a certain amount of time.

If your dandruff seems to be too out of control, you may need a stronger formula. A doctor can prescribe a medication for you that may be effective. A prescription shampoo will most like be more expensive than nonprescription shampoos. There isn't a clear cut reason why some peoples scalp reacts to certain yeast or shampoos differently. But either way, you can try different remedies for a dandruff free scalp.
