How to Rid Your Dog of Dry, Flaky Skin

S. Morris
As a pet owner of three dogs. I have faced the issue of dry and flaky skin with them. It is common amongst many kinds of dogs. I have this issue with both of my older dogs. A German Shepherd mix, 10 years old and a Miniature Dachshund, 9 years old. At times I notice it more often then other times. Winter and Summer are the most common of times for my dogs. If you have this problem with your dog or dogs, then try these steps to help stop or minimize the dry and flaky skin.

Step 1: Brush Daily

Even if your dog has a short coat, I would recommend this step for you. Using a soft bristle brush or a brush with a bit more coarser bristle, brush gently removing loose hair and the flakes out of the dogs coat. You don't want to use a fine toothed comb or metal bristle brush. This may just irritate the skin more. Doing this minimizes the constant flakiness from getting everywhere. Also, your pet loves the attention and the brushing feels great to them!

Step 2 : Bathe Often

Bathing your dog at least once a week, is a great way to eliminate the dry and flaky skin. The best kind of shampoo is one that contains oatmeal and is an all Natural or an organic product. Only Natural Pet Store, has great products for these kinds of shampoos and conditioners. Using a conditioner that also contains oatmeal relieves skin and can be very useful. I have found this to be very helpful, on a regular basis, for my two dogs. Dry with towel well after each bath. Removes the skin and doesn't leave much room for chapping of the dogs skin either.

Step 3: Choosing the Right Products

When choosing beds, brushes, flea medications, foods, etc. All these can affect your dogs skin and coat. Having the right products for your individual dog or dogs can really make the difference. Your dog may be of a certain breed, age, have lighter skin, or a certain length of hair. Products made for a older dog may vary a lot when it comes to a puppy. So when choosing these items , remember your dog individually.

Step 4 : Inside or Outside?

Now, think about what kind of dog you have. Is it small, medium, or large? Does it have short, medium, long, or no hair? Is it an older dog or young? Thinking about these things could really help your dogs skin. It can help you to identify whether your dog should be an indoor dog to protect its skin or an outside dog . Being inside, for some dogs, can protect the coat against wind, rain, sun, and dust. All things in the environment that can affect a dogs skin.

Step 5 : Check Skin on a Regular Basis

The best preventive measure when it comes to your dog is checking their skin regularly. When doing this, it helps you see if it is going away , getting worse, or anything else that may be of concern. Then you will know if it is Vet needed.

Try these steps to help your dog. Dry and flaky skin can be irritating for your pet. It can be itchy, it can cause sores, etc. Be sure to always consult your pets Veterinarian. As they are professionals and may have to give your dog a medicated product.
