To make the homemade gnat traps you will need the following items.
Soda bottle: this can be a two or three liter bottle.
Sharp knife: this will be needed to cut the top off the bottle.
Vinegar: apple cider works the best, but you can use regular white if that's all you have on hand.
Sugar: just plain granulated sugar.
Water: enough water to fill the bottle half full.
1. Rinse out the soda bottle.
2. Using a sharp knife, carefully go down about two inches from the top of the soda bottle and cut the bottle top off. You Don't want to cut to much or the top will not stay on your gnat trap when you turn it upside down. (See picture 1)
3. Fill the bottle with the vinegar (1/2 cup), sugar (1/2 cup), and enough water to fill the bottle half full. You can stir the liquid mixture around to mix the sugar in. Don't fill the bottle to full, or the gnats will be able to escape. The liquid should not be touching the opening of the bottle.
4. Place the soda bottle top that you cut off on the bottle upside down. The opening of the bottle should be inside the bottle. If you find the top keeps falling inside the bottle you can use a piece of duck tape to keep it in place. ( See picture 2)
This simple to make homemade gnat trap will attract the gnats with the sweetness of the cider vinegar and the sugar. Once they get inside the bottle they have a hard time getting back out and usually drown in the liquid. You should notice a big decline in gnats within a few hours. Gnats are attracted to any types of food crumbs, bread, moisture, sink drains, fresh produce, etc. Keep your fresh produce in the refrigerator. If you find gnats around the bread, place it in the fridge too.
If you observe gnats coming from the sink drain they can be stopped with a simple homemade recipe.
Pour baking soda in the drain. Next pour about a cup of white vinegar down the drain. If there is still baking soda left in the drain after the mixture fizzes add a little more of the vinegar. Do not run any water down the drain for one to two hours. You can also use bleach instead of the baking soda and vinegar mixture if your nose can stand the smell.
These simple tips can help to rid your house of pesky gnats.

Post a Commentnice article, very creative approach to gnat control
homemade solutions always sound great but in my experience they don't solve the problem. it really is worth the money to just let professionals handle it. we use http://columbia.mosquitosquad.com/ and they have been a huge help. they know where to look for the source of gnats and how to get rid of the problem completely - well worth the money.

This is how I got rid of those nasty flying things. I had tried everything listed on this site.
1. Re-plant your house plants.
2. Put a layer of sand on the plants.

I have another similar solution to gnat problems that works. I put three drops of dishwasher detergent into a glass and fill it about 1/3 full with pure apple cider vinegar. I leave the glass sitting whenever I see any gnats. Nothing else I have tried works but this to get rid of gnats. They are attracted to the scent, and when they drink it, they drown. No mess, no mixing, no fuss. I use a small juice glass but any size glass will do just fine. Keep all the drains in your home closed so they can't come in through them. They still will find a way inside though, even though I have plugged up every hole I can find in my apartment. I am very clean, and they still find a way to get inside. I think sometimes they just build nests inside walls and come in very small openings that way. Also, any apple cider vinegar will work, but I believe the stronger the scent, the better it works. White House Apple Cider Vinegar works best for me, and I use Dawn Dishwashing Liquid. That particu
The Ultimate Gnat Trap:
I tried the techniques described here with some success (though I had to add a duct tape wrap between the two sections as it virtually impossible to cut a soda bottle without distorting it) but I am a life-long tinkerer so I had to extrapolate. My "modified" device has proven deadly effective.
I start with a "Aroma Saver" Folgers coffee plastic can. (Maxwell House and others now use this same design so I am not advocating one brand of coffee) It's a two pounder so it much less likely to be knocked over than a soda or water bottle. I add a small funnel (the bottom of the opening is about the size of your pinky nail) and is readily avaialable at your local auto parts store or hardware store for less than a buck.)
Open up a hole in the lid of the coffee can equal to the width of the funnel with a hand drill. If you are tool deprived just use an Exacto knife to open an x shaped slit and shove the funnel through the lid. Then use RTV (commonly known as Pe
