How to get rid of hiccups: Background
I haven't had the hiccups for nearly 20 years.
OK, that's not entirely accurate. I still get the hiccups, but I make them go away within three seconds every time, using a method I refer to as the "inverse burp." This technique always works for me, but I have a difficult time explaining it to others. But let's give it a shot.
How to get rid of hiccups: The inverse burp
When you burp, you expel a bubble of air. The inverse burp is just the opposite. Using the muscles in the back of your throat, you inhale until a bubble of air forms. There's no need to open your mouth to do this.
If you're having a hard time, try burping normally, then immediately inhale using the same muscle.
How to get rid of hiccups: The process
As soon as I get the hiccups, I perform the inverse burp and hold my breath briefly, leaving the bubble of air in the back of my throat. When the next hiccup comes along and hits the bubble of air, that's it. The hiccups are gone for good.
If the hiccups don't disappear right away, try the inverse burp a couple more times. When I first started using this technique, sometimes it would take multiple attempts, but now I almost always get it the first time. In fact, as soon as I feel the hiccups coming on, I perform the inverse burp without even thinking about it, and when that first hiccup hits the bubble of air, they immediately disappear. It's almost an involuntary reaction at this point.
How to get rid of hiccups: Summary
I haven't read anything about this inverse burp technique online so I don't know if anyone else will have success with it. Let me know in the comments if it works, or leave a hiccup suggestion of your own!
