Ants can be some of the most annoying insects alive. It seems like they can sniff the smallest crumbs of cake or candy that the human eye might never detect. Before you know it, there's a line of them marching to and from your home from an unknown place. It can be difficult to permanently get rid of ants from your home. Before you pay an exterminator to rid your home of ants, first try some easy techniques yourself.
If at all possible, try to figure out exactly why the ants are entering your home. There might be a food or water source that you are not aware of. If you see a trail of ants in your home, try to locate where they are coming from and where they are going. If you find a food or water source that seems to be the cause of ants in your home, eliminate it as much as possible. Without a food or water source, the ants cannot survive in your home and will quickly find another means of getting the resources they need.
Keeping the kitchen clean and clear of food and water is another way to get rids of ants that are in your home. After meals, make sure to securely store any leftover food. Wash and put away the dishes and wipe down the countertops, stove, table, and sink. Sweep and mop to remove any food and residue from the floors. Also make sure that there is no standing water anywhere, this includes bathrooms. By making sure that there is nothing readily available for ants to eat or drink it will deter them from invading your home.
Ants may be entering your home through cracks in the wall, seal them with caulk immediately. This will help to keep ants out of your home. Pour boiling water over any ant mounds that are in or near your yard. This will drown them out and keep them from invading your home. You can also use a spray or dust designed to kill ants on the outside of your home. Use the dust or spray around the entire perimeter of your home to keep the ants from entering your home through any cracks that you failed to seal.
If you find that these methods are unsuccessful, you can then call an exterminator to assist in getting the ants out of your home. Exterminators have professional strength solutions that kill ants and prevent them from getting into the home. The exterminator might also provide additional information on preventative measures for keeping ants out of the home.
Although they can be stubborn and pesky, it is possible to get rid of ants and prevent them from returning to your home. By making sure that the ants do not have a way inside the home and that they do not have anything to eat or drink if they happen to get inside, you are taking the necessary steps to keep ants out of your home.
