The first step is to kill the source in which mosquitoes proliferate. Mosquitoes like to breed in stagnant, standing water and if you have empty flower pots that can accumulate rain water in your backyard or something similar, then the chances are good that you are giving a mosquito the perfect breeding ground scenario. The best thing to do in this case is to eliminate anything around the house that has the potential to be a breeding spot for mosquitoes.
If you have a pond in your backyard, you can fill them with goldfish. Goldfish will feed on mosquito larvae and keep the pond clean.
Finally, keep your grass cut short.
How to get rid of mosquitoes in your backyard
Another natural solution to getting rid of mosquitoes is to fill your yard with certain plants that will keep pests at bay. Gardeners know about these plants and liberally will grow them to create a natural pest barrier. These plants work as a natural pesticide because for one reason or another, they find the smell intolerable. And the best part is that they work as a natural mosquito repellent.
Marigolds- Marigolds are probably one of the best mosquito repellants but I have to warn you. Some people find the smell that emits from these flowers as terrible. The good news is that mosquitoes feel the same way.
Catnip-Catnip is typically used for...cats. But did you know that catnip is ten times better than DEET in repelling mosquitoes? It isn't the catnip itself but the oil of the catnip that works. If you have a patio or deck, you will notice almost an instant mosquito reduction just by planting some catnip around it. And if you have a cat, then that is a double bonus!
Getting rid of mosquitoes doesn't have to be done with harsh pesticides or chemicals. While these methods don't really do much in the way of reducing the mosquito population, they can be the difference between a backyard cookout with them or one without them. And the best part of these solutions is that you will not only be getting rid of them naturally, you will be adding things to your backyard that will actually enhance it aesthetically.
