The first step is to kill the source in which mosquitoes proliferate. Mosquitoes like to breed in stagnant, standing water and if you have empty flower pots that can accumulate rain water in your backyard or something similar, then the chances are good that you are giving a mosquito the perfect breeding ground scenario. The best thing to do in this case is to eliminate anything around the house that has the potential to be a breeding spot for mosquitoes.

If you have a pond in your backyard, you can fill them with goldfish. Goldfish will feed on mosquito larvae and keep the pond clean.

If you have a patio or deck, you will notice almost an instant mosquito reduction just by planting some catnip around it. And if you have a cat, then that is a double bonus!

Getting rid of mosquitoes doesn't have to be done with harsh pesticides or chemicals. While these methods don't really do much in the way of reducing the mosquito population, they can be the difference between a backyard cookout with them or one without them.
