How to Get Rid of Moss and Algae From a Roof

Robin Stone
Moss and algae on the roof can be a very big annoyance. It does not actually harm the roof of your home but it does not look very attractive. Roof moss and algae usually occurs in climates where they are very dry, humid summers and very wet, cold winters. Are you wondering how to get rid of roof moss and algae? Here are some tips on how to do so.

Replace all of the Shingles

One of the ways to get rid of moss and algae from the roof is to replace all of the shingles. Depending on the area that needs to be replaced, this can be fairly expensive, however. It is a good idea to replace all of the shingles if they are not all that new.

Spray Wash the Roof

A less expensive alternative is to spray wash the roof. Use a mixture of 50 percent water and 50 percent bleach. It is important to avoid getting any plants by this mixture, as it will kill them. Be sure to rinse the roof with straight water when you are finished.

Stain Cleaning Products

There are a number of products that are designed to be used in the home which will do a great job at removing algae and moss from the roof. Some of the different stain cleaning products that you can consider using are Oxiclean, Oxygen Boost, Clorox Oxygen Bleach, and Stain Solver. All that you need to do is spray one of these products on the roof to remove the stains.

Prevent Algae From Coming Back

It is unlikely that you will want to repeatedly take care of this problem. This is why it is important to do everything that you can to prevent the moss and algae from returning. If you are having the shingles replaced, then have them replaced with algae-resistant shingles. The reason they are resistant is because they are made from zinc and copper. Install strips of zinc or copper under shingles that you are not planning to replace to prevent algae from returning.

It is important to keep in mind that removing stains from the roof can be a somewhat difficult process. If you are not familiar with spray washing or replacing shingles, then it is a good idea to get in touch with a contractor and allow them to do it for you. Although it will end up costing you a little bit more money than if you had done it yourself, you will be able to feel rest assured to know that the job is getting done right.
