How to Get Rid of Room Odors Using Natural Ingredients Without a Fragrance Smell

Chelsea Hoffman

Fragrance-free odor neutralization is ideal for people who have sensitive noses and allergy problems. Fragrances are used to mask and deodorize bad odors; neutralizing the odor without scent simply eliminates the bad smell. Doing this without fragrances enables you to keep your environment smelling fresh and clean without having to dowse your home in a perfumed essence.

Things You'll Need
  • Baking soda
    Vented talcum pots
    White vinegar
    Wool shammy
    Vacuum cleaner

Step 1

Fill a 4-ounce vented talcum pot with baking soda. These pots can be purchased in craft supply stores. Untwist the top lid, exposing the slotted inner seal of the container and allowing air to flow through the baking soda without it spilling from the pot.

Step 2

Place the slotted baking-soda pots throughout your home, focusing on highly trafficked areas that are prone to odors, such as bathrooms and kitchens. They can be hidden in artificial plant arrangements to control odors unobtrusively.

Step 3

Make a solution of two parts boiling water to one part white vinegar. White vinegar has powerful cleaning capabilities. The cleaning mixture itself smells pungent, but once it dries, it leaves behind no scent.

Step 4

Clean floors, walls and other areas with the water-vinegar solution instead of your usual cleaner that contains fragrances. This solution cleans, shines and sanitizes all surfaces without scenting everything.

Step 5

Open screened windows and doors to ventilate spaces that have odors. Air out the house for an hour a day. Use fans to get the air moving throughout the rooms.

Step 6

Sprinkle baking soda over the surface of your carpet. Let it sit atop the carpet for 15 minutes before you vacuum it. Baking soda absorbs odor particles, neutralizing the smells tracked into your rugs and carpets.
