How to Get Rid of the Smell of Cat Urine on Carpeting

Use the Power of Citrus

Crystal Ray
Cat urine has a very distinct smell, and it can be difficult to remove from porous surfaces. When cat urine comes in contact with carpeting it can be especially challenging to get rid of, but it is possible to remove the odor in a few easy steps. Instead of replacing carpeting that has been stained with cat urine, consider the following easy ways to get rid of the smell. With a little elbow grease and a high quality odor removal product, the smell of cat urine on carpeting will be gone for good along with the stains.

Precautionary Statement

Do not use anything other than the following recommended product before attempting to get rid of the smell of cat urine on carpeting. If another product is used first, the smell and stain could become permanent. In addition, when in doubt of the colorfastness of carpeting, test this cleaning method in an inconspicuous area before attempting to get rid of the smell and remove the cat urine stain. Follow product label instructions and precautions for best results.

Begin by Soaking Up the Moisture

Before attempting to get rid of the smell of cat urine using stain and odor remover, soak up as much moisture as possible using dry paper towels. Press down on the paper towels to remove urine that has soaked into the fibers of the carpeting and the padding beneath. Use as many paper towels as necessary to completely soak up the moisture. If any of the urine remains, the smell will be much harder to completely get rid of.

Use Nature's Miracle Orange-Oxy Power Stain and Odor Remover

Pet stores offer a fantastic product that works exceptionally well to get rid of the characteristic smell left behind by cat urine. Nature's Miracle Orange-Oxy Power Stain and Odor Remover works unlike any other product to completely get rid of cat urine stains and odors, and best of all it contains natural orange. It is available in a spray bottle as well as a gallon jug, and it is inexpensive and very easy to apply.

After soaking up the cat urine, completely saturate the stains using Nature's Miracle Orange-Oxy Power Stain and Odor Remover. It will take approximately one pint of the product to get rid of the stains and smell in a one foot by one foot area. If the cat urine has soaked into the padding, Nature's Miracle will soak into the area beneath the carpet as well. Allow the product to dry naturally. Once the carpeting is dry, the smell of the cat urine should be completely gone.

Repeat the Process if Necessary

If the smell remains after cleaning the carpeting according to instructions, repeat the cleaning process. If this product does not remove the smell and stains, chances are nothing will.

Citrus Works Well as a Natural Feline Repellent

If the slightest smell of cat urine remains on the carpeting after cleaning it using any method, the cat is likely to return and spray the area again. However, when using citrus products to get rid of the smell of cat urine, the cat is far less likely to go near it again let alone urinate in the same place. Cats hate the smell of citrus, and although the smell should be gone, the cat will not likely return to that area.

Get yourself about 2-3 Rottweiler's that will solve all your kitty problems. Trust me, you will never have to smell kitty urine again.

Oh yeah... they squint, pull back, and run away as if their tails are on fire! LOL They hate it. Citrus cleaner is the best.

The last part, about the cat returning to the same place, if he smells it, is so true. I know they don't like citrus. Ever peel an orange with a cat near by?

One thing I'd like to add is... cats that have never had accidents can begin going outside of the litter box if they have a urinary tract infection. They begin associating the litter box with pain, and they will go in other locations. If this happens, take the cat to a vet. With medication it can be cleared up and the behavior corrected. Thanks for the comments!
