Depending on how bad the smoke is, you may have to completely replace the carpets and repaint the walls. Before you paint the walls, you'll need to wash the walls to get some of the smoke that have leeched into the walls out of them. With repainting and putting in new carpet, your house will be rid of the smoke.
If you don't want to completely repaint, you can do these steps to help with the smoke smell.
Wash the walls. Smoke will be imbedded within the walls, in the paint and sheetrock. Wash using a mixture of water and vinegar. Vinegar will be able to cut through the resins and tar that smoke leaves behind and the smell of vinegar will dissipate over the next couple of days. Don't forget to wash the closet walls. The closet walls are right next to the clothes the smoker wears, which will easily transfer the smell to each other. While washing, having your windows open will help ventilate the room and hopeful clear out some of the cigarette smell.
Wash the curtains. Often people overlook the curtains, but these can absorb a lot of smoke over the years. If you are able to machine wash your curtains, add some vinegar in with it to help with the removal of smoke.
Cleaning the carpets - Vacuum the carpets multiple times. If you can rent a carpet cleaner, or have it professional done, that is recommended. If you can't rent a carpet cleaner, get a box of baking soda. Baking soda absorbs smoke, so if you will sprinkle it on the carpet and let it sit for a couple of hours. Then vacuum it up. Repeat this process a couple of times and it will help with the smell.
Try using Febreze or candles to help the area smell better. I've had mixed results with these and I don't think that it will get rid of the smells, but it will only mask the smell. Another good idea is to make sure that the filters for the furnaces are changed.
Hopefully these ideas will help. Feel free to leave a comment with any ideas that you have or things that you've tried.
