Eliminate Shade From the Yard
Large trees, bushes, and tall plants that provide a lot of shade should be removed from your yard. Snakes love the shade because it gives them somewhere cool to lay. The more sunlight that hits your yard throughout the day, the better.
Keep Your Grass as Short as Possible
Snakes like to hide in high grass so mow your grass frequently. Keeping the grass short will prevent the snakes from wanting to hide out in it. Snakes will also be much easier to spot when the grass is shorter as opposed to when the grass is high.
Consider Getting an Outdoor Cat
Snakes often come into yards because they are attracted to smaller animals, such as mice and chipmunks. An outdoor cat will be able to take care of these problems. Also don't be surprised if your outdoor cat takes care of the small snakes that come into your yard as well.
Know Where Snakes Hide Out
If you have seen a snake in an area of your yard several times in the past, there is a possibility that this may simply be an area that attracts snakes. Generally, this will be some place shaded, such as underneath a porch. Snakes also like laying on concrete surfaces. Check out these areas before allowing kids and pets out to play.
Remove Additional Snake Attractions
Wood piles and mulch are two examples places that snakes enjoy. These, and any other places where snakes may hide out, should be removed from the yard. The less areas that there are where snakes can be attracted, the more likely the snakes will be to find their way into your yard.
If you or one of your children experiences a snake bite, it is important to care for it properly. This means that you should wash it, keep the bite below the heart, and put a bandage on it. It is a good idea to look up pictures of poisonous snakes in the area that you live. If you suspect that a snake bite may have been from a poisonous snake, then you should seek medical help immediately. Do not even wait for the appearance of the bite to worsen, get straight to an emergency room and call an animal control officer to retrieve the snake.
