No matter what you call it, a muffin top, love handles or a spare tire, fat around the middle is hard to get rid of. Here are some tips on how to get rid of a spare tire.

When getting rid of excess belly fat, it's important to look at how it gets there in the first place. Although heredity can play a role, a spare tire can be increased by stress, food choices, type of exercise and aging.

Reduce Stress to Get Rid of a Spare Tire. The stress hormone cortisol changes how your body stores fat. Long-term stress increases the chance that fat will be stored in the belly over other areas of the body, even if you watch what you eat and exercise your mid-section. Some ways to reduce stress include different types of meditation, exercise and removing the stressors you can from your daily life.

Using Food Choices to Get Rid of a Spare Tire. It may seem obvious that extra calories and unhealthy food choices lead to extra fat stored in the body. But it's not just foods high in fat that lead to increased belly fat. Excess consumption of refined carbohydrates can also trigger your body's response to store fat in your middle. Eating more whole grains as a part of a healthier lifestyle can help you lose belly fat.

Choosing Types of Exercise to Get Rid of a Spare Tire. Spot training the abdominal muscles may tighten your belly but will not get rid of excess fat in that area. Spot exercise alone simply does not burn enough calories and fat is lost all over the body rather than in just one area. You can increase your overall fat loss, including in your middle, by engaging your aerobic activity at a minimum of half an hour a day, at least three times a week.

Aging Affects Belly Fat Leading to a Spare Tire. As we age, changes in the body can alter where fat is stored. Often activity levels are decreased and less calories are needed to maintain the body's functions. Add to that hormonal changes that increase fat stored to the middle and a spare tire can result. The good news is that belly fat can be reduced even with aging by making healthier lifestyle choices, increasing activity and dealing with hormonal changes in the body.

How to Get Rid of a Spare Tire. There is no miracle cure to get rid of belly fat or a spare tire. By reducing stress, making healthier food choices, increasing activity and dealing with the effects of aging you can reduce the amount of fat that accumulates to cause a spare tire.
